Check Engine Light — common questions

Is it safe to drive with the check engine light on?

If it's steady, usually short-term. If it's flashing, pull over — that signals a misfire that can damage the catalytic converter.

Can a loose gas cap trigger the light?

Yes. It's one of the most common causes of an EVAP code.

Will the light go off on its own?

Sometimes, but the fault is usually still there. Get it scanned.
